What is My Pinball Machine Worth?

The value of your pinball or arcade machine is based on many factors. Below are some of the factors that collectors look at when purchasing a used pinball or arcade machine. See below for recent selling prices from actual Pinball Value listers.

Condition

Game condition is key to maximizing the value of your machines. Many collectors strive for machines in good to excellent cosmetic condition. However, a dirty game does not mean it's in bad condition.

Conditions that diminish the value of your game include: wear on the playfield surface, broken features, scaped and knicked cabinets, burned plastics, missing lamps, and pieces. The better the condition, the higher the sale price.

Location

Where you are located makes a difference as well. Pinball machines tend to fetch higher prices in areas such as the northeastern U.S. or the West Coast. There are many collectors in these areas willing to pay a little more for a nice machine.

This doesn't mean you cannot get a prime price for your machine elsewhere!

Game Type

Believe it or not, there are different types of pinball machines. There are Electromechanical Machines from the 1960-1970s and Solid State machines from the 1970s to the present.

Solid State machines are essentially pinball machines controlled by a computer. Although its more complicated than that, a CPU drives the functions of the game. An electromechanical game is driven by a system of switches. EM games, as they are called, feature score reels and many chimes and bells to indicate scores.

Popularity

Some games are just plain popular and even if they do not work - or they are cosmetically a total pig, -they will still sell for good money.

For example, pinball machines such as Monster Bash, Attack from Mars, Cactus Canyon, Medevil Madness, Star Trek, Centaur, and Scared Still still command a high price!

Working?

The machine operational status also plays a part in its price. With the exception of Stern Pinball and Jersey Jack Pinball, many games were built over 10-30 years ago. Parts for these machines are either tough to locate or expensive. However, depending on the problem, some games are easy fixes. Remember, these games were built to withstand the abuse of an arcade so something minor could be the issue standing between you and a working game.

A Truly Honest Story

Once, we picked up a Street Fighter II pinball machine from a woman who said it "didn't work." and wanted $100 for it.

After looking at the machine over in a few seconds, I realized the connector was disconnected. As soon as I plugged the connector in, the game fired right up! Unfortunately, she decided not to sell the Street Fighter II pinball machine to me for $100 - but, we were glad she did not get ripped off elsewhere!
